Analysis of music videos - Beyonce

Analysis of music videos - Beyonce - Halo
Narrative
I have chosen the music video Beyonce - Halo to analyse, which is pop. The artist Beyonce is used within the video itself making it the pop star image identifiable.
I like this video a lot due to how it creates atmosphere around the aspect of love and feelings.
Andrew Goodwin’s theories of ‘there is a relationship between lyrics and visuals’ and ‘Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics’ clearly are shown within this pop video, by showing a narrative within the music video.
It is typical of music videos by using an action code, where the two faces are coming together suggesting kissing and romance this is enhanced with close up shots of faces to signify emotions within the characters which cuts to long shots to show full body shots.

Being a pop video, there are no stereotypical features that we would perhaps find in an R & B video for example cars, half naked women and mansions. This music video in terms of mise-en-scene is quite basic but powerful at the same time. Casual wear is used as costumes; one location is used being the house that the couple live together in. Hardly any make-up is used as it is portraying natural beauty within a loving relationship.
The denotation of light in this video is key as it uses high lighting and artificial lighting which have connotations of being in heaven, which could be a hidden message within the video.
This video contains non-diegetic sound. The video represents in terms of social class a fairly well off couple living in an apartment, gender representation is that they are equal in terms of power showing love and in terms of sexuality both heterosexuals in a loving relationship.
The overall myth/ideology of the whole music video is that love is a wonderful thing that takes you to a new level.
