Background History
The term ‘music video’ became popular to use in the 1980’s. Music videos were also known as MTV’s, Promotional clip, Film clip, and filmed insert. Music videos have used many different techniques and styles such as live action, animation, abstract film and documentaries. Many music videos use more than one technique within a video.
The first musical short films (arguably the first music video arrived in 1926 and produced by Warner Bros entitled Spooney Melodies. The duration of these lasted about six minutes, some of the techniques used were animations.
Music channels focuses predominantly on playing music videos from artists. Examples of television channels are VIVA, MTV, Kerrang TV and VH1. Music channels have since started to split up into certain genres of music on different channels; a perfect example of this would be MTV, which has Base and Dance.
